One of the quietest severe storm seasons ever recorded, 2005 will forever be remembered by me as the year of the Green Sky and Rainbow. Storm chasing in a quiet season allows me time to work on capturing the rich colors and textures of the weather and stretching vistas over which it forms. I hope the pictures from this year show that storms are exquisite even when tornadoes aren't present.

stormdoctor > I gauged the distance wrong in this photo resulting in the lightning being a bit blurred (ack!). This CG illuminates the plateau to the right of the photo near midnight on May 30, 2005.

stormdoctor > This spectacular double bow was actually a "quad" bow, but the other two bows are too faint to be full seen despite my best efforts. This formed on the back of a tornadic storm east of Trinidad, CO.

stormdoctor > In retrospect, I believe that this likely is a cold funnel: a feature that forms when a cold upper level disturbance moves over warmer lower level warm updrafts. This storm never showed any rotation on radar, but the funnel was very distinct and visually the storm itself appeared to rotate for a short period before it literally fell apart in a 15 minute span. Very cool.
